Summary

The Game Studio is a place where you can explore and discover what it means to create a game, from concept to a playable prototype. During the first period you will be working on your own game, from concept to a playable prototype, as a solo game developer. It’s about creating an interactive experience for the player and its up to you to think about what kind of experience you want to deliver, how you make this experience a reality and why you want to create this experience for the player. You will learn various skills ranging from concepting, game design, programming and self-organisation through workshops and lectures. Within the Game Studio we organise several events like feedback sessions, showcases and playtest events to help you along the way.

Overview

During period 1 in the Game Studio each student works on their own personal project and this is the sole focus. The personal project centers around creating a game(prototype), either analogue or digital, with the emphasis on creating an enticing experience and a thought-out core gameplay loop. It’s about creating an interactive experience for the player and its up to you to think about what kind of experience you want to deliver, how you make this experience a reality and why you want to create this experience for the player. Its up to you what kind of experience you want to create! The goal is not to create a final polished product but to create something that is achievable within the time that is available and to provide yourself the room to experiment and learn.

Our philosophy is not to focus on the ‘wedding cake’ but to create a ‘cupcake’ that also delivers the same type of experience when you take a bite.

The period is divided into two phases, exploration and creation. The exploration phase centers around inspiring yourself and others, translating ideas into visuals, textures, sounds, short stories, moodboards, concepting, finetuning and determining what you want to do, setting out goals and finally make a plan for the creation phase.

This plan is called the Personal Project Proposal. This document gives an overview of everything that you have discovered and gives the outside viewer an insight in what you envision your personal project to be. The exploration phase lasts around 2 to 3 weeks and although this might sound like a’lot, its an crucial part of the process since well begun is half done.

During the creation phase its time for the development of the personal project! Within the Game Studio we work with sprints that consists of two weeks. Each sprint ends with a Showcase Event during which you show the progress of your personal project and where you get feedback from teachers and peers to make informed design decisions for the next sprint. The emphasis during the creation phase is iteration and the continuous search for improvement on a personal and project level.

Sessions and Events

Within the Game Studio we organise several sessions and events to help you out during the process.

Feedback Session

During a feedback session you will receive feedback about the current state of your personal project. This session will be divided into several groups with around 3 to 5 students. As mentioned the goal is to provide you with feedback, from peers and teachers.

Game Dev Club / Troubleshoot Session

During the Game Dev Club our goal is to provide a space where you can work on your own game project and that we as a collective help each other out and inspire each other. Of course you can also work on a client project during the Game Dev Club.

During this session we (the community or participants) are available to help you out with any issues in regards to Game Development. These sessions take often place a day prior to a Showcase Session.
